Diary

Wednesday 11th October - Day 372

A bit like the border crossing in Panamá, if you didn’t know the Bolivian border office was where it was, it was pretty easy to walk past. Perks of having a group and a guide.

The wait here was purely so the Americans could go through their lengthy process at the border. It was then a very short drive to Copacabana.

We opted for the simple pre order lunch option at a restaurant on the lakefront by the large White Anchor. The food was cheap, pretty terrible but made it easy to park Nicola and the bags so Luke could run around town getting cash, a SIM card and food to cook at the hostel.

Annoyingly the Banco Union doesn’t accept Mastercard so with Luke’s Revolut card cancelled due to fraud he wasn’t able to get cash, only able to with Nicola’s.

When Luke returned back to the restaurant we managed to get a ride from a taxi driver who seemingly was chilling at the place doing nothing, and were dropped off at our hostel.

The hostel was amazing. Set at the top of a hill, hence the cab, it had nice views over Lake Titicaca and also Copacabana (although there really isn’t much to see).

The hostel room was probably the nicest we’ve had. Loved the room, the decoration, hot and cold water provided with coffee and tea.

We had no plan to leave the place given Nicola’s fragility and a lack of any massively desirable activities in Copacabana.

The hostel lasagne for Nicola was a welcome treat and before calling it an evening we went outside for the sunset.

Thursday 12th October - Day 373

Our bus to La Paz wasn’t until 6pm so we spent the whole day at our hostel doing sweet FA.

Nicola continued to deteriorate over the course of the day, lounging around all day on the rooftop terrace. It wasn’t too shabby as far as filler days go.

With our day done we got a taxi to the lakefront, were reunited with Danny & Sara for the final hop bus and left comfortably after 6pm on what would be the most poorly organised bus we would get on. The split of everyone between the two coaches was chaotic, everyone got mixed information and it all happened super late.

The drive was a bit more interesting than expected. After a short time we had to disembark from the coach in order for it to take what looked like a wooden barge that had little structural integrity. For us instead we had the comfort of a smaller and more secure boat across the lake.

On the other end Luke got a little lost around the barge town in the dark when his friends had left him for the bus.

La Paz was pretty manic when we arrived at around 10.30pm. Once at the Selina, Nicola ran in first to get us checked in ahead of a load of other people while Luke was on bag duty.
