Diary

Tuesday 28th November - Day 420

It was another early set off to Coyhaique to get the gravel roads done before a mass of rain made it more difficult. Turned out to be relatively simple minus the predominantly slow 40kph speed.

Once checked in we hit up the only supermarket along the Carretera Austral (not a bad one either) and spent the evening relaxing in the Airbnb.

Wednesday 29th November - Day 421

There aren’t a great deal of decent walks around Coyhaique, certainly no free ones, but Nicola managed to find one in the Reserva Nacional Rio Simpson. However this was found with immense difficulty and involved satellite view on Google maps to find the start.

The drive was pretty easy and was all tarmac’d minus a few tiny patches.

When parked up we were the only ones in the reserve apart from a group of school kids. For a rather uneventful 6km walk, £11 is too much.

Reserve details:

  • Cost per person = CLP11k

  • Payment = cash in person

  • Sector = Rio Simpson

  • CONAF Reservation = yes - they actually check

The best views were arguably at the start of the walk, huge rock faces overlooking the river with an abundance of colours of the forest.

An array of yellow greeted us in the form of a sort of buttercup field.

The walk was predominantly through forest with occasional viewpoints over the river. Killed a few hours but nothing to rave about.

Back in town we hit up the supermarket and had a wonderful afternoon reliving the torture of trying to get on a grad scheme as Luke had to do an online test. A less than simple maths exam using a phone calculator was not easy.

To celebrate we had some seriously dirty sausages and fried tatties. Delicious but damn we miss UK sausages.
